And Still The Hate Spreads

We talk about pandemics. Viruses infecting an entire population. People losing their lives. We speak about finding cures for diseases like cancer and the common cold, yet there are several pandemics occurring on this planet that have been plaguing the human race for centuries. These diseases have infected many people and, like uncontrollable wildfires, they have spread and decimated entire communities. I’m talking about hatred, selfishness, jealousy, corruption, lack of empathy, a love for destruction, cruelty and a thirst for chaos. The irony in all of this is that we have been given cures for these diseases, yet they continue to spread without much opposition. For these diseases, we were given love, compassion, selflessness, empathy, and benevolence. Somehow, these cures remain in their vials still highly potent, but barely used. This is a pandemic just as deadly and fearsome as any other virus roaming amok in our bodies. These things infect the heart and mind. They darken the spirit and rot the soul. Hate makes us wish ill on those who have shown nothing but kindness to us. Cruelty makes us find pleasure in the destruction of those who simply try to do what they feel is right.

How can we, in one breath, say we must show more love and compassion, yet continue to facilitate an environment for the things they are meant to eradicate?

How can we not use the cures that we have been given to combat these diseases? How can we, in one breath, say we must show more love and compassion, yet continue to facilitate an environment for the things they are meant to eradicate? We would not willingly stick out our arms to receive an injection of something that would surely kill us, yet many readily embrace the flowing of cruelty and hatred in their veins. Yes, I want a cure for cancer. I even hope that we can find a cure for the viruses that are plaguing this world right now, but my fear is far greater for where the hearts of men will be in the future. This is a pandemic that seems to be worsening by the minute and I have witnessed many hearts, including my own, having to go under quarantine just to be safe from this spirit-killing infection. I don’t want to be infected with these things. In my darkest hours, I have felt the suffering that these diseases bring to the soul that carries them. I have also seen the damage that it can do to one’s spirit. If we are to fight any diseases and pandemics, let it be the toxic feelings that seek a home in our hearts. Let it be the darkness that no longer fears the piercing light. We have four chambers in our hearts. Hate is a four letter word, but so is love. We can either carry the disease in our heart’s chambers and aid in its spreading, or we can be the harborers of the cure… and actually use it.
